Richard Eugene Vernia, 63, Oblong, IL passed away at 5:10 p.m. ET on Friday, June 5, 2015 at IU Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN from numerous long-term medical issues.

Richard was born on October 15, 1951 in Robinson, IL the son of John Joseph Vernia and Catherine Fern McIntosh Vernia.  On August 1, 1970 he married Alma Rosalie Spencer who survives.

Richard started out as a construction worker and then worked as a Decoker at Marathon Oil Refinery in Robinson, IL.  Richard was a member of the Robinson High School Class of 1969.  He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, visiting with friends and family, gardening when he could, playing games on the computer, chess and making people laugh.  Most of all, he enjoyed spoiling his granddaughter Erica, which always put a sparkle in his eye and a smile on his face.  He was so very proud of her.

Richard is survived by his wife Rosie Vernia of Oblong IL; two sons and daughter-in-law Richard Scott Vernia of Oblong, IL and Ross Spencer and Ruth Vernia of Oblong, IL; his granddaughter Erica Nicole Vernia of Oblong, IL; two brothers and sisters-in-law George and Carol Vernia of Danville, IL and Robert and Jan Vernia of Carmel, IN; two sisters-in-law Jackie and Gary Murdock and Agnes and Pete Chiasson all of Oblong, IL; brothers-in-law Larry and Katie Barnbrook of Rockville, IN, Gary Barnbrook and Laura Wilder of Oblong, IL and Danny Barnbrook of Robinson, IL; father-in-law and mother-in-law William and Lela Barnbrook; 18 nieces and nephews, with Garrett Murdock being like one of Richard’s own boys.

Preceding Richard in death were his grandparents; parents; and a sister-in-law Clara Dunlap.
